Epic Diapers #54 – Legendaries, now TWICE as fast!

18 Jun

Which one is the black prince, and which one is me?

Click below for the audio segment:

Blizzard has a special buff running from June 17 through 30. It’s called, “The Gaze of the Black Prince.” No, he doesn’t have a thing for you, but he will think you’re more awesome for these two weeks! Blizzard is trying to make the grind for the legendary cloak a bit easier for many of us, which it will. I’m not really trying to complain here, but there is a sticking point that I can see many players having. Since this was announced right before it went live, you can’t blame those who have their mains or alts sitting at the “Test of Valor” quest part of the chain. Unfortunately for those stuck there, you need 3,000 valor points to reach the next step in the quest chain. Well, since you can only earn 1,000 valor points a week, unless you have more than 2,000 valor points, you will completely miss this buff. And furthermore, with 6 months left in Mists of Pandaria, why isn’t Blizzard just making this buff permanent? Yes, there are many of you that earned your cloak when you walked uphill both ways in the snow, but for God’s sake, it’s June! Maybe us procrastinators need a little more incentive than a 2 week buff.

Anyway, you can find my blog at EpicDiapers.com and you can follow me @ epicdiapers. I was also a recent guest on This Week in Science with Dr. Kiki, so if you’re interested in deep sea science, please check out their podcast number 468 from June 12. (or watch the YouTube below!)

Prepping for Patch 5.4

23 Aug

I wonder if those roof tiles are fire-retardant?

Following up on one of my recent segments on how to prep your main or alt(s) for patch 5.4, Blizzard and Wowhead have come out with some excellent summaries on how to go about doing this.

Now that valor and justice point costs seem to be set, you can plan out what gear to purchase and/or upgrade with your capped valor and justice. I myself have been on vacation and extremely busy at work, so I’m actually glad that they pushed 5.4 back 2 weeks. Of course, I’ll just have another excuse to push this off.

Although these guides are nice, they don’t prioritize what YOU want to replace/upgrade in game. For me, I’m taking a look at replacing my lowest ilevel gear first for my Warlock alt, then looking at what gear has the biggest ilevel jump for what I can purchase. This all can changes upon if and when I get more Barrens Battlefield upgrades.

If I don’t get any Barrens upgrades, but I DO cap out valor and justice in time (actually, I KEEP capping JP and have nothing to spend it on except converting to honor), I’ve prioritized my purchases with a little spreadsheet that tells me what’s the biggest item boost for my buck for my lock. Now, bear in mind that I don’t have any BiS gear, and the only 522 piece that I have is a necklace, so I’m not planning on using any valor to upgrade items. Besides, to upgrade an item 4 ilevel points costs 250 valor, which is 62.5 valor points per ilevel. With my 3,000 valor points, I can only purchase a maximum of 3 pieces anyway, and each one of them blow away upgrade efficiency by a longshot, and of course, I’m going for max ilevel boost right now. I can buy a ring, bracers, and a trinket for 2805 valor points total, but that will raise my ilevel by a total of 208 points. Throw in 2 pieces to upgrade with justice points, and I’ll raise my gear level from 469 to 487 and qualify for all LFR raids except the new Seige of Orgrimmar, which requires a 496 ilevel. However, with two or three pieces of gear from Barrens and hopefully a much-needed weapon upgrade, I could be raiding Orgrimmar with strangers within a week of the patch dropping.

My main could use some upgrades for sure, but he’s at 497, so he’ll be able to stroll into Orgrimmar when 5.4 drops anyway. My poor main…he misses raiding terribly.

Episode 32: DON’T Upgrade Your Gear (not with valor points, anyway)

upgrade

Upgrade vendors are going away with patch 5.2, and many players think that you should upgrade your gear before the patch hits. This sounds reasonable at first, but I took a deeper look into the numbers and the efficiency of this strategy, and with an exception, I believe you should NOT upgrade your gear.

Ok, nerd-alert!

It costs 750 valor points for a 4 item level upgrade, which equals the benchmark value of 187.5 valor points per item level. This is not a good exchange rate compared to most of the vendor gear you can purchase. I recommend you rep up with Operation Shieldwall or Dominance Offensive to get ilevel 496 gear for 4 different slots: a ring, trinket, waist and feet. Even at this rate (before patch 5.2), it would take amassing 6,500 valor points to purchase these 4 items, which would take you no less than 7 weeks with the 1,000 VP/week cap. Obviously, there are some exceptions to this advice: 1) if you have a best-in-slot piece that you are confident that you won’t be replacing for 6+ months, then you may want to upgrade. 2) If you have capped at 3,000 valor points and don’t have the rep anywhere to purchase gear, then you may want to burn 750 to bump your best piece 4 item levels (but sheesh, get going on some rep!!). 3) If you refuse to do ANY dailies, well then, yes, upgrade your gear I suppose, but it better be 476 or higher from LFR and regular raiding (You can upgrade blue gear with justice points).

All of my spreadsheet magic can be found here:

Bottom line: The math says that until you have only item level 483 equipment or higher left to replace, replace it with vendor reputation gear, UNLESS you have a best in slot item that you know that you won’t replace in the next 6 months. Additionally, in patch 5.2, 5.0 vendor gear, which is ilevel 489, will cost 50% less, and 5.1 gear will cost 25% less. Knowing this, you may only want to spend valor points when you reach the 3,000 VP cap and use whatever you save to immediately purchase discounted gear once 5.2 drops.

12/3 Hotfixes: Valor Points Increased….barely!!!!

4 Dec

The increase from 25 to 40 valor points per raid boss is a mere drop in the bucket of the weekly cap

I’ve been actively raiding with my team (Noogie Nights, represent!) and we’re currently 4/6 in MV 10 normal. However, in my inebriated state last week, I realized that we were only receiving 25 valor points PER RAID BOSS! I honestly thought this was a joke that escaped me. Well, the value did escape me like my two year old’s wet diaper. Quite honestly I was floored that a RAID BOSS gave as much valor as 5 dailies. And, I’m sure we’re all sick of dailies at this point. 🙂

Just yesterday, Blizzard implemented some 5.1 hotfixes and now they’ve increased the valor points rewarded per raid boss to a whopping 40. I feel a Dr. Evil “reallllly” coming on while I stroke my hairless cat. 40 points. 40. Let that sink in. 40.

So, I’m someone with limited playing time, and now that I’m back to raiding 6 hours per week, I can’t afford to do my dailies, LFR, dungeons and scenarios like I was before jumping back into raiding. All of those activities were to prepare for raiding. It certainly looks like I’ll never hit the VP weekly cap now, not that I ever did in the first place. Assuming we’re knocking out 6 bosses in a couple of weeks, that would still put me at only 240 VP. I ain’t got the time to supplement the remaining 760, outside of a few dailies.

I suppose though, that the devil’s advocate would purport that I have the chance to obtain 489 epics through raiding INSTEAD of gaining valor points for the purpose of obtaining gear, and there is some validity to the point, but I don’t believe it as far as some at Blizzard that have stated it’s essentially double-dipping. This was the argument for eliminating championing factions with tabards in heroic dungeons. In fact, I hit the loot jackpot last week, receiving 3 plate dps items (I’m a frost DK), and 1 set of tanking boots in 4 bosses. Yes, I got a drop a boss, so I’ll stop bitching for a while about my lack of gear, but that’s beside the point to the philosophical argument I present to you today :).

What are your thoughts on the meager increase in valor points, and the general challenges of capping valor AND reputation every week?

Oh, and by the way, I had taken a few months off to take care of family matters, but I’m ramping up my recording schedule, including the AIE Raid Wrapup.

Dragon Soul Tier Gear: RNG v Raid Composition

30 Dec

Where's my loot, DW?! NVM, I'll ask Blizzard.

Patch 4.3 has been out for some time now, and my raid team has hit the 10 man normal raid, Dragon Soul, week after week. Acquiring gear is always subject to the RNG that is the roll and what actually drops, but I have a complaint about the change in how players acquire tier 13 set gear in 4.3. Previously (tier 11 and 12), 3 out of the 5 tier pieces were purchased with valor points, but you did have to down the final 2 bosses to have a shot at your tier shoulders and helm. Most of our raid team would be fairly balanced in terms of 2-3 tier pieces after a couple of months of raiding that tier level. However, I find myself in the same time frame out from the patch’s drop, yet I have zero tier pieces, but our resto shaman has 6! Yes, 6! He has 3 tier pieces each for his resto and balance sets. How did we get here?

Blizzard decided to change how you acquire tier gear. Tokens to purchase tier gear are only available from the bosses in normal and heroic Dragon Soul (except the first boss, Mor’chak). We have yet to down Ultraxion as our DPS isn’t quite there, so my raid team has only been able to gain access to 3 pieces of tier gear via tokens. The main problem with this system is raid composition. The tier token that applies to me (a death knight), is also shared by rogues, mages, and druids, the only token applying to 4 classes. That’s SIX of our 10 team members! (2 DKs, 2 druids, 1 rogue, 1 mage). We have one priest and one paladin, but no warlocks, so only 2 are rolling for that token, and one hunter and one shaman (and no warriors) that roll for the third token.

This week was even more infuriating. All three tokens that dropped were for the same group (warrior, hunter, shaman), an occurrence that only has a 1 in 27 chance. We normally have one shaman and one hunter, still unbalanced compared to my token, but this week our hunter was out (replaced by a rogue, ironically), so our Shaman picked up all three tokens…in one run in one night! This is how he has acquired 3 tier pieces for each set.

There is something inherently wrong with a system in which one raid member can pick up 6 tier pieces and a few others have picked up zero. My token has a 1/3 chance of dropping off each boss, so on average, one of my tokens will drop each raiding week. Since I roll against 5 others, my chances of getting a tier piece start at 1/6. Obviously, as those that share my token group get their main spec gear, my chances improve, but it will take months before I get 3 tier pieces for my main spec, unless I’m incredibly lucky on rolls.

At least our Hunter, Shaman, Priest and Paladin will be sporting their 3 pieces before our unfortunate group of 6 will even have 1 or 2.

I am not considering LFR tier gear in this post, as it’s inferior to the normal tier gear, which is what I’m shooting for. However, at this point, I’ll take it. Unfortunately, I have yet to get any pieces in my 3 LFR runs. In fact, I seem to be losing out on melee DPS gear to tanks, just to rub it in. Thanks again, Blizzard; now go and fix this!
