Photo of the Moment

Although it’d be nice to have the “photo of the day,” we all know that’s as realistic as me making a major league team.

So, I thought I’d start a new page on my site that highlights my other interests. Specifically, photography (and more specifically, underwater photography!)

For a lot more of my photography, you can visit sanctuarysimon.org/photos where we have thousands of marine life photos freely accessible for non-commercial use. We also have an iOS app called “SeaPhoto,” where we’ve selected 1,300 photos (551 species) for display, along with copious amounts of life history information.

Look back here often as I’ll post pics every week or so, along with a little tidbit of information. Hope you enjoy!

01.14.15 – Happy belated New Year everyone! I’m enjoying the first 2 months of Warlords so far, although the garrison chores are a bit draining. Here’s a picture of a white-spotted anemone that is very common in subtidal waters around the Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur coast. Beautiful invertebrate with striking reds, pinks and yellows.

11.13.14 – In honor of Warlords of Draenor having launched today, here is a Horned shark that I snapped about 10 years ago. Harmless, but something about that horn/tooth on the dorsal fin that makes me think it belongs in the seas of Draenor.

03.27.14 – Rainbow star. Unfortunately, these stars have been decimated in 2013-14 by an unknown disease named “seastar wasting disease.”

01.08.14 – First photo to share for the new year. I thought something cold would be appropriate, in honor of all my friends experiencing the POLAR VORTEX!! (it’s 70 degrees here in northern California, btw).

A small portion of an iceberg floating in the straights of Alaska. I took this while sipping hot coffee aboard a small city-sized cruise ship, while wrapped in a robe, not even thinking about the cold, but rather, my next hot tottie.

11.19.13 – I turned 40 over the weekend, and although I should post pics from my drunken-fest-bocce-ball-vodka incident, I’ll spare you and just post some pretty underwater pictures, as I will be diving today.

Curious harbor seals tend to come over and check us out while diving. They do occasionally request a scratch under the chin, but generally just nibble on our fins and dive slates. Like underwater puppies.

We often encounter swarms of jellies when we dive near Carmel, CA. This particular species can leave a nasty sting, but is not very dangerous. It really does hurt the lips, though. Maybe a good collagen injection replacement?

10.9.13 – The government is shut down. I took this picture while working for the government. You’re welcome.

9.19.13 – It’s Pirate Day! No picture of a pirate, though…is this self-portrait close enough?

Argh…I’m an underwater pirate, but sadly, my parrot doesn’t have gills…

8.23.13 – Horn shark; just don’t get it too excited…

7.31.13 – Another subtidal shot; this one of a Cabezon today.

This ugly feller is a Cabezon (Scorpaenichthys marmoratus), a sculpin common to California and the Pacific Northwest. They are quite comfortable with divers taking pictures right up in their grill. I shot this in 2009 near Pacific Grove, CA.

7.30.13 – HA! Started this page over two weeks ago and forgot to update it. Well, here’s a few more for your consumption:
